The goal of this project was to illustrate the torn out page of a book, which we were dealt randomly. The book that my page was torn from was from the series The Kane Chronicles, about a pair of siblings who find out they are related to ancient Egyptian gods. On the page, the god Sobek rises from a river, and proceeds to fight the protagonists. I chose to depict the moment that he rises from the water since it was described with such striking imagery.

I kept the composition simple to focus on Sobek, and I worked in watercolor to cultivate a moody atmosphere. Before attempting to draw a crocodile man, I gathered crocodile reference pictures, and learned to draw crocodiles. After that, I tried to follow the description in the book as closely as I could, while also checking to see how he might have dressed, historically, and using that to fill in the gaps that the description left me.
