The Hermit

This is a tarot card, created for a class project where we had to choose a tarot card and create our rendition of it. I was attracted to the idea of the hermit card, which I read is associated with wisdom and spiritual enlightenment. The lantern he holds illuminates the way forward, but only so far.

I was exploring more traditional compositions, when it occurred to me to try a narrower, more personal view of the hermit. I depicted the lantern light illuminating his face to symbolize that not only is the way forward lit up, but that he may also learn about himself.
